Sunset Tower

This painting is based off a photo I took of...Pittsburgh. I don't have that particular photo uploaded anywhere...but I do have a sketch of it I did a couple months back for perspective practice: [link] (the sketch on the right is a streetview of Washington, DC)

I really like that yellow building you see up close, because it looks very storybook-ish. It houses an incline train, you can read about it here: [link] Neat, huh?

I decided to do a sunset because I haven't painted one of those in a long time. That's a mini dragon on top of the tower, and a couple hot air balloons in the distance.
That was supposed to be silhouettes of two people in the window, but the shorter one doesn't look much like a person. It looks more like the taller person is playing piano or pulling a book off a shelf.
The larger buildings off in the corner are meant to be a castle or palace-type place. Once I got around to painting it, I did it impressionist-style because I didn't want to bother with making a detailed city at such a small scale.

This painting is also heavily inspired by a picture book I bought recently: "Dinotopia: Journey to Chandara." It's a nice little story filled with gorgeous oil paintings.

Who knows? Someday, Pittsburgh might just be a fairy tale city with mini dragons and balloon travel.
