I really hope this'll show up in paintings -> fantasy; my previous submission I put drawings -> fantasy -> animal characters, and it forwarded into anthro, which it isn't. =/ I know they're trying to make the categories easier to navigate, but it doesn't always help.

So, I wanted to do a painting of lollipops. But, there had to be something more to it than that, so I thought of including some colorful fish as well. I looked through my aquarium fish handbook for ideas, and found a page with seahorses on it. Cool!

Those are intended to be cartoony/fantasy seahorses. Upon looking in my book, I see that seahorses have plated bodies and not smooth ones, and decided not to go with plates on them.

In the past, I've had trouble in my painting when I use mixed colors. I usually run out of a mixed color before I'm finished needing it. Of I can mix it again, but it'll be a slightly different shade. x__x So this time, I intentionally used more than I needed when I had to use mixed colors (which were teal, light purple, and pink).

When using paint, the way of getting the "shadow" of a color is to mix it with the opposite color. That's how I got the dark yellow in the left lollipop, by adding a tiny bit of purple. When doing the right lollipop, I was a little confused and was thinking the blue is the opposite of red (it's actually green), but that shade of purple I wound up with still works.

Oh, compare this to my seahorse painting from years back: [link]

I didn't get all the painting done that I supposed to in my watercolor class last semester. =/ Which is a disappointing, because my painting isn't up on the level of my drawing and colored pencil. That's why I'm going to focus some more on painting over the summer. The only way of getting better is by doing!

Done with watercolor.

I had to grin, such a fun composition. I like the green sea horse with its hansome little green fins.

I think it's great when an artist includes technical facts about how they made their piece. Not sure why, I just always have . I remember taking Two-dimensional design in school and thinking that the trick for shadows with paint was a bit strange - I liked pencils and charcoal more, and all you needed there was a darker shade or just increased pressure on the point. I think I actually broke more than a few sticks of coal that way.

Big improvement!!! I like the intense colors and smooth, defined lines.
